Discover Ceredigion

No visit to Aberystwyth feels quite complete without walking along the promenade and spending some time on the Royal Pier. The pier first opened in 1865 and was the first pleasure pier in Wales. Today it combines its historic seaside location with food, drinks, arcade games and a growing collection of competitive social activities. Families can visit the arcade, pick up something to eat or enjoy the views across Cardigan Bay. Adults and older groups can also try activities in

At the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade, Constitution Hill rises steeply above the sea. You can walk to the summit, but Aberystwyth Cliff Railway provides a much more relaxing alternative. The railway carries visitors from the bottom of the hill to the summit, avoiding the climb while still delivering the reward. From the top, you can enjoy wide views across Aberystwyth, Cardigan Bay and the surrounding coast. On a clear day, this is one of the best places from which to

Do not be misled by the word “library”. The National Library of Wales is not somewhere visitors are expected to sit silently in a corner while somebody watches them suspiciously over a pair of glasses. It is one of Wales’s major cultural institutions and holds collections connected to the country’s history, language, literature, art, photography, maps, music and public life. Visitors can explore a changing programme of free exhibitions that brings items from those collections

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is one of those places where you can arrive planning to look at an exhibition and somehow leave several hours later after watching a film, buying something from the shop and stopping for coffee. Located on Aberystwyth University’s campus, it is a major centre for arts, culture and entertainment in Mid Wales. Its varied programme includes cinema, theatre, music, comedy, dance, family performances, exhibitions, workshops and creative courses. Because the

You do not need complicated equipment or an ambitious itinerary to enjoy Borth. Sometimes the best holiday activity is simply choosing a direction and walking beside the sea. The long beach stretches north from the village towards Ynyslas, providing plenty of opportunities for gentle walks. Depending on the tide and conditions, you can wander along the sand, return through the village or continue towards the dunes and nature reserve. The Wales Coast Path also passes through t

After a day of walking, swimming, golfing or attempting to remain upright on a paddleboard, there are few things more welcome than a friendly local pub. The Railway Inn is a family-owned pub and restaurant on Borth High Street. It combines a cosy atmosphere with food, drinks and the sort of warm village welcome that makes visitors feel comfortable from the moment they walk through the door. There is a beer garden for brighter days, while pool and darts provide entertainment w

There cannot be many seaside villages where you can spend the day on the beach and the evening enjoying dinner and a film in a converted Welsh chapel. Libanus 1877 is an independent boutique cinema and restaurant in Borth. It offers a comfortable, personal alternative to the large multiplex experience, showing a changing programme of new releases and family films. The setting gives the whole evening a sense of occasion without making it feel overly formal. You can combine a m

A holiday beside Cardigan Bay provides plenty of opportunities to look at the water. Aber Adventures gives you the chance to get into it. Based around Borth and the surrounding area, Aber Adventures offers surf lessons, stand-up paddleboard tuition and kayak hire. Sessions are available for complete beginners as well as people looking to improve existing skills, with instruction tailored to different abilities and goals. This means you do not need to arrive carrying a surfboa

At the northern end of Borth, the village gives way to open sand, rolling dunes and the wide Dyfi estuary. Ynyslas feels wonderfully spacious, with plenty of room to walk, explore and temporarily forget what day of the week it is. Ynyslas forms part of the Dyfi National Nature Reserve. Its dunes support an impressive variety of plants, fungi and insects, while the estuary’s mudflats, saltmarsh and sandbanks provide important feeding and resting areas for wetland birds. It is

Golf is occasionally described as a good walk spoiled. At Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club, even a troublesome round comes with views that make finding the rough feel slightly less painful. Established in 1885, the club describes itself as the oldest golf course in Wales. The course stretches from the edge of Borth towards the dunes of Ynyslas and is the only true links course in Ceredigion. It was redesigned by celebrated golf course architect Harry Colt in 1947. Its coastal posi
