A round beside the sea at Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club

Golf is occasionally described as a good walk spoiled. At Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club, even a troublesome round comes with views that make finding the rough feel slightly less painful.

Established in 1885, the club describes itself as the oldest golf course in Wales. The course stretches from the edge of Borth towards the dunes of Ynyslas and is the only true links course in Ceredigion. It was redesigned by celebrated golf course architect Harry Colt in 1947.

Its coastal position means the wind may have a few ideas of its own about where your ball should go. That is part of the fun of links golf, or at least that is what golfers tell themselves while reaching for another ball.

The club welcomes visitors and societies, making it an excellent addition to a holiday in Borth. More experienced golfers will appreciate the challenge, while the scenery and traditional links setting make it a memorable course for anyone playing it for the first time.

Make a day of it

After your round, you can continue towards Ynyslas for a walk through the dunes or return to Borth for something to eat and drink. It is also close enough to Pen y Graig for golfers to enjoy a relaxed start rather than the usual early-morning dash across unfamiliar countryside.

Tee times, visitor arrangements and course conditions can change, so check with the club before travelling.

Pen y Graig tip: Bring an extra layer. The breeze beside Cardigan Bay can be refreshing, particularly when your ball has just disappeared into it.
