Seaside fun on Aberystwyth’s Royal Pier

No visit to Aberystwyth feels quite complete without walking along the promenade and spending some time on the Royal Pier.

The pier first opened in 1865 and was the first pleasure pier in Wales. Today it combines its historic seaside location with food, drinks, arcade games and a growing collection of competitive social activities.

Families can visit the arcade, pick up something to eat or enjoy the views across Cardigan Bay. Adults and older groups can also try activities including shuffleboard, augmented reality darts, pool, snooker and table football in the Billiard Bar.

Visit during the day or evening

During the daytime, the pier is a natural stopping point while exploring the seafront. You can grab food, enjoy the amusements and watch the waves from a location that has welcomed generations of visitors.

Later in the day, its bars and entertainment spaces make it a popular social destination. Different parts of the venue have different opening hours and age arrangements, so families should check what is available before travelling.

The pier is also a lovely place to watch the evening light over Cardigan Bay, although winning a large arcade prize and fitting it into the car afterwards may prove more complicated.

Pen y Graig tip: Combine the pier with the castle grounds, town centre and promenade for an easy day exploring Aberystwyth on foot.
