Seaside fun on Aberystwyth’s Royal Pier

No visit to Aberystwyth feels quite complete without walking along the promenade and spending some time on the Royal Pier. The pier first opened in 1865 and was the first pleasure pier in Wales. At the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade, Constitution Hill rises steeply above the sea. You can walk to the summit, but Aberystwyth Cliff Railway provides a much more relaxing alternative. The railway carries visitors from the bottom of the hill to the summit, avoiding the climb while still delivering the reward. Do not be misled by the word “library”. The National Library of Wales is not somewhere visitors are expected to sit silently in a corner while somebody watches them suspiciously over a pair of glasses.
